We Have Just Visited Coleton Fishacre – And It's Still One of Devon's Best Days Out!

A Return to Coleton Fishacre – And It Was Every Bit as Magical as We Remembered
We have just visited Coleton Fishacre, National Trust, for the first time in a while, and we honestly couldn't believe we had left it so long. Tucked into a sheltered coastal valley on the stunning South Devon coast, Coleton Fishacre is one of those rare places that quietly takes your breath away the moment you step through the gate. Whether you're a seasoned National Trust member or visiting for the very first time, this extraordinary property is guaranteed to leave a lasting impression.
From our base at The Cleveland Bed and Breakfast in Torquay, Coleton Fishacre makes for a perfect day trip – and the drive alone, winding through Devon's gorgeous coastal lanes, is something special in itself.
What Is Coleton Fishacre?
Coleton Fishacre is a National Trust property near Kingswear, South Devon, built in the 1920s for the D'Oyly Carte family – the theatrical dynasty behind the famous Savoy operas. The house itself is a stunning example of Arts and Crafts architecture with Art Deco interiors, but it's the gardens that truly steal the show. Tumbling down a lush valley all the way to the sea, the 24-acre garden is planted with an incredible collection of exotic and subtropical plants that thrive in the mild Devon microclimate.
The Gardens – A Subtropical Paradise
When you visit Coleton Fishacre, one of the things that strikes you immediately is how the garden feels almost otherworldly – like stumbling into a secret jungle with sea views. Towering tree ferns, vibrant agapanthus, New Zealand flax, and swathes of colourful perennials line the winding paths that lead you gently down towards the dramatic coastline. At the bottom, a small lookout offers jaw-dropping views across the sea towards Dartmouth – the perfect spot to pause and soak it all in.
Even if you visit multiple times across different seasons, the garden transforms beautifully throughout the year, offering something new on every visit. Spring brings an explosion of colour, summer is lush and tropical, and autumn adds a warm, golden glow to the whole valley.
The House – A Step Back in Time
The interior of the house is equally captivating. Thoughtfully presented by the National Trust, the rooms give a real sense of the glamorous, creative lifestyle enjoyed by the D'Oyly Carte family during the 1920s and 30s. Keep an eye out for the gorgeous Art Deco details, original furniture, and the charming little details that make the house feel genuinely lived-in rather than simply preserved.
Practical Tips for Visiting Coleton Fishacre
- Getting there: Coleton Fishacre is located near Kingswear, approximately 12 miles from Torquay. The narrow country lanes require careful driving, so allow extra time. National Trust members enjoy free entry; non-members should check the National Trust website for current admission prices.
- Wear comfortable shoes: The garden paths are steep and uneven in places, so sturdy footwear is highly recommended.
- Allow plenty of time: We'd suggest at least 2–3 hours to properly enjoy both the house and gardens without rushing.
- Visit the café: The on-site café serves delicious light lunches, cakes, and refreshments – perfect for a mid-visit break with a view.
- Best time to visit: Spring and early summer are particularly spectacular, but honestly, any time of year has its own charm.
