A little more than a B&B...

We’re Matt & Lissanne, and we’ve been welcoming guests to The Cleveland since we moved to Torquay and bought the B&B in 2013.

For us, running The Cleveland has always been about much more than providing a room and somewhere to sleep. It’s about creating the kind of stay where you feel genuinely looked after — from the moment you arrive to the moment you leave.

A warm welcome, a relaxing environment, a comfortable room, a great breakfast, perhaps dinner and a drink in the bar, and a few thoughtful touches along the way.

It’s the little things that make a stay at The Cleveland memorable.

Hospitality is what we do
Between us, we have a lifetime of experience in hospitality, working both in professional kitchens and front of house.

Over the years, we’ve had the opportunity to work alongside some of the biggest names in the industry, including Gary Rhodes OBE and Albert Roux OBE.

That experience has shaped the way we run The Cleveland today.

We understand that good hospitality isn’t simply about getting the big things right. It’s about the details, the quality of the food, the cleanliness of the rooms, the little touches and, above all, making people feel welcome.

We genuinely enjoy looking after people — and we think that shows.

A warm welcome from the moment you arrive

We want your stay to feel relaxed from the very beginning.

After your journey, there’s nothing quite like being greeted with a pot of tea or coffee and a slice of homemade cake, taking a moment to settle into our lounge or enjoy the garden.

From there, we’ll show you to your room and make sure you have everything you need for your stay.

Our six en-suite bedrooms are individually styled and designed with comfort in mind, with quality beds and bedding, thoughtful amenities and those little extras that make your room feel special.

You’ll find homemade fudge waiting for you, Devon bottled water and luxury toiletries, alongside the things you’d expect from a comfortable modern stay, such as smart tv’s and rainfall showers.

Because while the room itself is important, it’s how you feel in it that really matters.

Great food is part of the experience

Food has always been a big part of our lives, so it has naturally become a big part of The Cleveland too.

Breakfast is something we’re particularly proud of. We use quality ingredients and local produce wherever we can, and everything is freshly prepared to order.

Our breakfast has been recognised by The AA with a breakfast award for 11 consecutive years — but what matters most to us is hearing guests tell us that it was one of the highlights of their stay – ‘the best breakfast they have had”.

You don’t have to head back out in the evening either.

Our evening meals give you the chance to relax here at The Cleveland after a day exploring Torquay and the English Riviera.

Enjoy a drink from our fully licensed bar, settle into our dining room overlooking the garden and let us take care of dinner.

Why do guests come back?

Perhaps the nicest part about running The Cleveland is seeing guests return.

Some come back because they loved their room.

Some because of the breakfast.

Some because they enjoyed being able to have dinner here after a day out.

But the majority tell us it’s the welcome, the personal service and the feeling of being looked after that brings them back.

We’re incredibly proud of that. We’re also very proud of the recognition The Cleveland has received over the years, including our AA 4 Star Gold rating, our AA Breakfast Award and our Travellers’ Choice Award.

But awards only tell part of the story. For us, the real measure of what we do is whether our guests leave happy, relaxed and already thinking about when they can come back.

That’s what we’ve always wanted The Cleveland to be. A comfortable place to stay. A place to eat well. A place to relax. And somewhere you feel genuinely welcome. "Fabulous stay at the Cleveland, fantastic 5 star rooms. Bed was so comfortable, very well equipped room with nice little extras and touches. Nothing was too much trouble for the hosts, down to fresh milk and a small fridge in the room to the most perfect poached eggs I have ever had. Great location on a quiet street with off road parking, walking distance to the beach with lots of choices of bars and restaurants. Will definitely return!"
